For business accounts requiring cylinders size 125 and above, we offer daily rent. We swap empty for full cylinders as needed via delivery truck or in our stores. All assets are barcoded and tracked by serial number. To open a business account, complete our New Account Application.

Ownership Options

A cylinder’s owner has cradle to grave responsibility for it. Buy any new, blank neck ring cylinder sizes 125 and smaller in one of our stores. You pay for the gas and the cylinder outright. You now own this asset. We will gladly fill it for you as long as it’s in-test. You, as the owner, are responsible for the maintenance costs of keeping the cylinder in-test and safe to fill. With the exception of our small acetylene cylinder exchange program, when you bring your customer-owned cylinder to us, we fill that exact asset and return it to you.

What happens when it is out of test? We offer cylinder retesting. Our stores are certified propane visual inspection stations. All other cylinders must be sent out for retesting. If your cylinder is out being tested and you need a cylinder to use in the interim, you can rent a ‘similar’ cylinder.

Leasing Options

We designed our lease program to benefit our small business customers who only have one or two cylinders onsite and do not turn them quickly. Lease a cylinder size 125 for a nominal upfront investment plus the price of the gas. Leases renew on an annual basis until the cylinder is returned. No partial refunds are available if the cylinder is returned mid-year. We own the asset and you purchase the fills as needed. The annual lease is designed to “pre-pay rent” for the entire year on one asset.

Gases and Liquids

The Compressed Gas Association (CGA) splits compressed gases into two primary categories depending on their physical state in containers under pressures and temperatures, and in their range of boiling points: nonliquefied gases and liquefied gases. When nonliquefied gases, which are those that are gaseous at ordinary ambient temperatures regardless of pressure applied, are cooled to temperatures below their boiling points, they become liquefied. At these low temperatures, they are referred to as cryogenic liquids. Common examples of cryogenic liquid supplied by Butler Gas Products are oxygen and nitrogen. Because the temperature difference between the product and the surrounding environment is substantial, keeping the surrounding heat from the product requires special equipment to store and handle cryogenic liquids. A liquid cylinder, commonly called a Liquid Dewar, is constructed like a vacuum bottle; it is designed to keep heat away from the liquid that is contained in the inner vessel. Liquid cylinders operate at pressures up to 350 psig and have capacities between 80 and 450 liters. Product may be withdrawn as a gas by passing liquid through an internal vaporizer or as a liquid under its own vapor pressure. Cryogenic liquid containers are equipped with pressure relief devices to control internal pressure. Under normal conditions, these containers will periodically vent product (a loud hissing noise); never plug, remove, or tamper with any pressure relief device. Because venting is an intentional design aspect of the container, always store and use liquid cylinders in an open space with adequate ventilation. To move, use a cart designed to handle liquid cylinders. Never allow any unprotected part of the body to come in contact with un-insulated pipes or equipment that contains cryogenic product. Acetylene

Slightly lighter than air, Acetylene is a colorless, flammable gas, and burns in the air with an intensely hot, luminous, and smokey flame.

Acetylene gas can change to its liquid and solid forms in a relatively simple manner. However, in these phases, Acetylene becomes a highly hazardous material that is shock-sensitive and can explode when ignited. For this reason, shipment of liquid or solidified acetylene is prohibited. Unfortunately, gaseous Acetylene can also be explosive if mixed with air or Oxygen and ignited or can decompose with explosive force under certain pressures and conditions. Therefore, Acetylene cylinders are designed to avoid decomposition by containing porous mass filler which is saturated with a solvent such as acetone. These features enable Acetylene gas to be contained under moderate pressure without the risk of explosive decomposition.

Acetylene is a raw material used to combine with a variety of reactants to form a plethora of compounds. These compounds can be used to create an assortment of products such as plastics, synthetic rubber, pharmaceuticals and more. Acetylene is also used in welding, cutting and heat treating.

Argon

Argon is an inert, rare, atmospheric gas. It is colorless, odorless, tasteless, water-soluble and nontoxic.

However, Argon can easily trigger asphyxiation when it dilutes Oxygen in the air below levels needed to support life. Inhalation in extreme concentrations can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and loss of consciousness which can prevent saving oneself and ultimately result in death. Typically, Argon is stored in high pressure cylinders, tubes or tube trailers. Argon is normally stored in its liqueified phase at the consumer’s site in cryogenic liquid containers and vacuum-insulated cryogenic storage tanks.

Argon is primarily used for filling incandescent and fluorescent lamps and electronic tubes. It is also used as an inert gas shield in arc welding and in the production of titanium, zirconium among other reactive metals and for growing silicon and germanium crystals. Among other purposes are heat treating, high purity, and semiconductor applications.

CO2

Carbon Dioxide is a compound of Carbon and Oxygen. As a gas, it is colorless odorless, somewhat acidic, and rather nonreactive and nontoxic. It does not burn, support combustion nor life. Carbon Dioxide is one of the materials that mammals, including humans, naturally breathe out and one of the materials that plants take in to produce Oxygen through photosynthesis.

Carbon Dioxide can be in contained in all three phases of gas, liquid and solid. Together, gas and liquid can be stored in a closed container in a balanced form. Carbon Dioxide has many medical applications but can also be hazardous to one’s health and respiration and should only be used medically under the direction of a physician.

The most prevalent use of Carbon Dioxide gas is for carbonation, typically of soft drinks and beer. It is also used as a chemical water treatment, as an inhibitor of mold and bacterial growth, and as a protector from oxidation. Liquidized Carbon Dioxide is used as a refrigerant, a fire extinguishing agent, and controlling chemical reactions, among many other applications.

Dry Ice

Dry Ice is solid carbon dioxide. In this phase, the Carbon Dioxide is a frozen material of -109.3F (-78.5C). It should be stored in well-insulated containers and protected from dust and insects that can contaminate the storage of dry ice.

Dry Ice is also exceptionally hazardous in this phase and should never be handled with bare hands. In addition to using gloves or ice tongs, handlers should avoid contact with skin and eyes, and never taste it. Solid Carbon Dioxide can displace Oxygen and cause asphyxiation. Static electricity contained in the dry ice is particularly hazardous and can create sparks even to objects that are electrically grounded.

Dry Ice has many uses in refrigeration and cooling of objects, particularly perishable foods during transit. It also has significant industrial applications as a cooling agent. Dry ice should be allowed to vaporize as the preferred means of disposal. It should not be disposed of in bodies of water, sewers, sinks, toilets, garbage bins, unprotected boxes or in areas accessible to the general public. Helium

Helium is a rare, atmospheric gas. It is inert in both chemical reactions and radiation and it conducts heat better than any other inert gas, even neon. Helium is nontoxic, nonflammable, and only slightly soluble in water.

However, asphyxiation can result when Helium dilutes Oxygen in the air. Inhalation in extreme concentrations can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness and death in seconds and without warning. Gaseous Helium is typically stored in high pressure cylinders, hydril tubes or tube trailers. The container used for shipping liquid Helium is typically also used as the storage container to minimize losses of helium by transferring it from one container to another.

Helium has an extensive list of uses including a lifting gas, a gas shield, a cooling medium in nuclear reactors, in the production of transistor crystals, lasers, and fiber optics, to trace leaks in refrigeration and other closed systems, in chromatography, and cryogenic research, and is necessary by NASA to maintain the liquid Hydrogen tanks used in rockets and on the Space Shuttle. Helium is also necessary for cooling superconductive magnets and other magnetic uses.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the lightest known gas. It is also colorless, odorless, tasteless, flammable and nontoxic. Hydrogen burns in air with a pale blue, almost invisible flame. Frequently, Hydrogen is produced on-site and pipelined to the facility. Smaller consumers have gaseous Hydrogen delivered in cylinders, tube trailers or by cascade into on-site storage cylinders.

The commercial uses of Hydrogen include the production of chemicals such as compound catalysts, plastics, pesticides, among others. It is used in metallurgy for production and heat treatment to prevent oxidation. Other industries use Hydrogen in ovens and furnaces, welding and cutting, fuel cells in power applications, glass manufacturing, refining crude oil, laboratory instruments, the manufacture of semiconductors, generating electrical power for aerospace, air separation, and nuclear power plants.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is an inert gas and the major gas found in the atmosphere. It is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. It is also colorless when liquefied. Nitrogen is nonflammable. Gaseous Nitrogen is typically stored in high-pressure cylinders, tubes, or tube trailers, whereas liquid nitrogen is typically stored at the customer site in cryogenic liquid containers and vacuum-insulated storage tanks. Nitrogen can be shipped as a gas or as a cryogenic fluid.

All safety precautions must be taken for handling compressed gas containers, nonflammable gases, and cryogenic liquid. Nitrogen causes asphyxiation when it overcomes the Oxygen needed to support life.

Nitrogen has extensive purposes throughout a variety of industries, for example, the propulsion of liquids through pipelines, pressurizing aircraft tires, and purging in the brazing of copper tubing for air-conditioning and refrigeration. Liquid Nitrogen also has a variety of purposes including freezing of highly perishable food such as fish and chicken, the cooling of concrete, and simulating the conditions of outer space, among many others.

Oxygen

Oxygen is the elemental gas that supports life. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It also supports combustion even though it is nonflammable. When oxygen is present, the burn rate of flammable materials will increase. Also, in the presence of Oxygen, combustibles such as oil, grease, diesel fuel, and kerosene can become explosive when ignited.

Despite its life-sustaining abilities, the fact that it reacts with other materials to make them highly combustible causes it to be a hazardous material and all sources of ignition should be removed, including cigarettes and cigarette smoke. High-pressure cylinders, tube trailers, and tack cars can all be used to store Oxygen in its gaseous phase. Oxygen is often liqueified for storage as you can store increased amounts. When stored in a closed container, it must have a pressure release device such as a valve that can open and close.

Gaseous Oxygen is used in many medical applications, including emergencies. Except in special cases, the inhalation of Oxygen is medically helpful but should only be used under the direction of a physician.

Propane

Propane gas is flammable, colorless, noncorrosive, and nontoxic. It is easily liqueified and is typically shipped and stored as a liquid. Propane is highly combustible and inhalation of high concentrations can have an anesthetic effect but since it can replace Oxygen in the air, Propane can also cause asphyxiation.

It is generally used as a fuel in both its liquid and gaseous phases. It also has thousands of other uses in industrial, commercial, and agricultural applications. Propane is frequently combined with butane since they can occur as hydrocarbons between natural gas and natural gasoline.
