For laboratories, manufacturers, environmental applications, research facilities, and other precision-driven operations, the difference between “gas in a cylinder” and a true specialty gas product comes down to control: control of raw materials, cylinder preparation, blending, analysis, documentation, handling, and every step in between. At Butler Gas, specialty gas production is not an add-on to our business. It is a core manufacturing capability.
We operate an automated specialty gas plant and laboratory at our Pittsburgh headquarters with ISO 17025 accreditation and PurityPlus Tier4 producer capabilities. This combination reflects a disciplined approach to technical competence, analytical processes, documented procedures, and consistent specialty gas production.
Made in Pittsburgh. Built for Precision.
Our Pittsburgh facility fills, mixes, and sources a broad range of high-purity gases and custom gas mixtures. Capabilities include high-purity and ultra-high-purity grades, unanalyzed and certified mixtures, primary standard mixtures, ppm- and percentage-level blends, multi-component mixtures, EPA protocols, NIST-traceable products, and specialized applications across a wide range of balance gases.
For applicable gas mixtures, production includes the use of a cylinder inverter to thoroughly mix the contents of the cylinder. By physically rotating the cylinder after blending, the process helps promote a homogeneous mixture before final analysis and release. It is one more example of the controlled production steps behind a specialty gas product — because accurately adding components is only part of the job; the finished blend must also perform consistently for the customer’s application.
Behind those products is extensive analytical capability. Depending on the application, our team can support purity analysis, blend verification, certification requirements, and the documentation customers need for critical processes.
When a requirement falls outside what we produce ourselves, our national network of specialty gas manufacturing partners expands our reach into rare gases, specialized mixtures, and specialty gas equipment. Customers gain the responsiveness of a regional, family-owned supplier without sacrificing access to broad technical capabilities.
Quality Starts Before the Fill
Specialty gas quality is not created by analysis alone. The cylinder itself is part of the product system.
Our specialty gas cylinders are maintained as a dedicated population separate from our industrial gas fleet, helping protect the integrity required for sensitive applications. Cylinder preparation can include specialized processes based on product and application requirements.
We also use packless diaphragm valves on our specialty gas cylinders. Unlike valve designs that introduce packing materials, threads, or lubricants into the gas stream, diaphragm valve construction is designed to support high leak integrity and reduce potential sources of contamination.
Then there are the details customers may never think to ask about, but we believe matter. Even after the product is made, analyzed, and prepared for delivery, we shrink-wrap our valves to help protect them through handling and distribution. Because precision should not stop when the cylinder leaves the lab.
Traceability Beyond the Gas
For many customers, especially universities and research institutions, specialty gas management does not end with knowing what is inside the cylinder. It also means knowing where the cylinder is, who is using it, and where the rental cost belongs.
Through Butler Gas CYLTRAK cylinder tracking capabilities, individual cylinders can be traced through the distribution cycle and associated with specific customer ship-to locations and cost centers. For a university environment, that creates the ability to organize cylinder accountability at a much more useful level — by campus, building, department, research group, or individual laboratory.
That visibility matters when dozens or hundreds of cylinders are moving among shared facilities and research spaces. Rather than treating cylinder rental as one broad institutional expense, customers can gain clearer visibility into which labs are holding cylinders and where ongoing rental costs are being generated.
For procurement teams, environmental health and safety groups, facility managers, and principal investigators, better traceability can mean fewer lost cylinders, more accurate internal cost allocation, improved inventory control, and less time spent trying to determine where an asset went.
The result is more than cylinder tracking. It is a better connection between the physical asset, the user, and the cost.
Local Capability Means More Than Local Supply
Producing specialty gases in Pittsburgh gives our customers something increasingly valuable: access. Access to people who understand the application. Access to technical support. Access to regional inventory and production capabilities. Access to decision-makers when a requirement is unusual, urgent, or simply important.
It also creates continuity across the entire customer experience. We can produce and analyze the gas, prepare the cylinder, mix applicable blends using a cylinder inverter, protect the valve, distribute the product, track the physical asset, and help customers understand where cylinder rental costs are accumulating.
As a third-generation, family-owned gas manufacturer and distributor, Butler Gas combines specialty production capability with the service model our customers have relied on since 1948. We manufacture. We analyze. We distribute. We track. And we stand behind the cylinder after it arrives.
For us, specialty means more than a grade of gas. It means treating every detail as part of the product and ultimately, the customer experience.
